Students mean Business at BoAML

Year 7 students had their first opportunity to work with Enabling Enterprise last week and meet with the school’s key partner Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

The programme got off to a great start back in April when Sixth Form students completed a highly successful ‘Commit to Confidence’ Challenge Day which was designed to give students the opportunity to focus on key enterprise skills and  apply them in real world scenarios.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch is one of the world’s largest financial institutions, serving individual consumers, small- and middle-market businesses and large corporations with a full range of banking, investing, asset management and other financial and risk management products and services. Their Chester office is located just outside the centre in the city’s business park. It was fantastic to be able to take students to such a large employer just a few miles from our school.

The Challenge!

Problem Solving and Staying Positive were the key skills the students needed to rely on as they tackled ‘Trading Triumphs’. Right from the start, volunteers and Year 7 students alike threw themselves into the day and showed they were amazing at Being Creative, building tall and stable shoe towers, giving themselves inspirational team names and asking relevant and insightful questions as they went on a tour. But soon it was time to get down to business and use their Listening and Understanding skills in order to learn about the client and the companies they could invest their money in. As the challenge progressed, the students continued Aiming High throughout the day, completing the tasks under tight deadlines and reflecting on how they were using their skills to succeed.

The Result

The final aspect of the day was Presenting their outcomes to the judges. This gave the teams the opportunity not just to say what they had done but also to explain how they had developed their skills. It was fantastic to see how much they had grown in confidence since they’d arrived and how proud they were of what they had achieved through Working in a Team. Each of the students had the opportunity to show that Leading was part of their skill set and had a new-found confidence that they could take back to school.

“I’m really proud of the presentations we did today and it made me realise that speaking in front of people isn’t that bad and if I can do it here, I can do it back at school.”
