Sixth Formers get #thisclose

Sixth Form students proved they had green fingers during Citizenship Day this week as part of a whole school community project to help regenerate the school's sculpture garden. To coincide with the project and to raise awareness for World Polio Day on 24th October, Chester Riverside Rotary visited QPHS and generously donated over 200 crocus bulbs for the students to plant.

As part of their Citizenship Day on 18th October, Year 12 students showed community support for their school environment by working alongside Mrs Blears-Chalmers and Mr Parker to revive the partially neglected sculpture garden. The intention was to redevelop a long lost pond that was buried under a huge tree and in turn attract a host of wildlife in the coming months.

This one day project benefits the whole school community and paves the way to transform the former sculpture garden into a ‘peace’ garden that offers all students a quiet space to reflect, read, contemplate and enjoy.

To coincide with the project and to raise awareness for World Polio Day on 24th October, Chester Riverside Rotary Club visited QPHS and generously donated over 200 crocus bulbs for the students to plant.

Their organisation provides opportunities to support charities and good causes, both locally and overseas. Their main focus is to eradicate the paralyzing disease known as Polio. Students were asked to hold their fingers together as an international sign to signify that Polio has almost been eliminated from the world - ‘this close’!

Year 12 invested time and effort to get stuck in to the demanding job of cutting away bushes, trees and digging the hole for the pond. Teamwork was key to success and as the day unfolded, students’ began to see the wonders of their hard work.

The pond is now almost complete; new liner, rockery, grasses and bulbs planted around the edge to make it a key feature and focal point. All we await is a heavy downpour to fill the pond and let nature take its course, bringing new life back into the garden for us all to enjoy in the Spring next year.
